Cambodia 2014: Week Ten

We began the week as usual at the Children’s Surgical Centre. We had 2 patients booked in for therapy sessions in the morning but unfortunately both didn’t turn up!

However, we did see an 18 year old patient who had come for a follow up appointment with the surgeon; the surgeon requested that speech therapy would see him also. The patient had his lip repair at 11 years old and had only just had his palate repair at 18 years. He was concerned about his unclear speech, and told us he stopped going to school at 11 years old because…

Cambodia 2014: Weeks Eight & Nine

Week 8 was another national holiday, can you believe it?! The water festival is serious business in Phnom Penh though; it marks the end of the rainy season as well as the reversal of flow of the Tonle Sap River. The main event of the three day festival is the boat racing. Competitors and supporters travel for hours from far away provinces to be a part of the celebrations in Phnom Penh. Cambodia 2014: Week Seven

From what we have gathered so far there is no real appointment system here in Cambodia so this is something we have been attempting to organise for the speech therapy services here. Cambodia 2014: Week Six

So we’ve come to the end of week 6, which is half way through our time in Cambodia. We’ve written the midway reviews and have been pleased with the progress that has been made but there is still a lot of work to be done to achieve the goals we set out at the beginning!

On Tuesday we started modelling articulation therapy to Samnang. Samnang already does an excellent job giving advice to his patients but this year we wanted to move the service on so he could start doing some basic articulation therapy with those patients that live close…

Cambodia 2014: Week Five

Well week 5 has gone by already, time is going so quickly! We feel like we’re getting into the swing of things now.

Our week began with the usual Tuesday morning tuktuk journey to CSC, our furthest setting which takes us across the Japanese bridge to another part of the city. We have a reliable driver for our Tuesday commute, which is more than can be said for his tuktuk…we’re one of the slowest vehicles on the road and there’s always a worry we won’t make it over the bridge!

Across the day we saw 5 patients between us, so…
